Muslim Contributions
That Changed the World

(Astrolabe)
Astrolabes, originally thought to be invented in the Hellenistic world in 150 BC, were further developed by Muslim astronomers, by introducing angular scales and adding circles indicating azimuths on the horizon. It was widely used throughout the Muslim world, chiefly as an aid to navigation and as a way of finding the Qiblah (Muslim direction of prayer facing Makkah). The first person credited with building the astrolabe in the Muslim world is reportedly the 8th century mathematician Muhammad Al-Fazari. Astrolabes were used to find the times of sunrise and the rising of fixed stars, to help schedule morning prayers. In the 10th century, Abd Al-Rahman Al-Sufi first described over 1000 different uses for an astrolabe, in areas as diverse as astronomy, astrology, horoscopes, navigation, surveying, timekeeping, Muslim prayer, Qibla, etc. Astrolabes were introduced to Europe in the early 1100s and had become the most popular astronomical instrument by 1650.

(Trigonometry)
Trigonometry remained largely a theoretical science amongst the Greeks. It was developed to a level of modern perfection by Muslim scholars, although the weight of the credit must be given to Al-Battani. The words describing the basic functions of this science: sine, cosine and tangent — are all derived from Arabic terms. Thus, original contributions by the Greeks in trigonometry were minimal.

(Algebra)
Muslim mathematicians, the inventors of algebra, introduced the concept of using letters for unknown variables in equations as early as the 9th century A.D. Through this system, they solved a variety of complex equations, including quadratic and cubic equations, and equations with letters such as the now familiar x and y's. They used symbols to develop and perfect the binomial theorem. The word "algorithm" comes from mathematician Al-Khwarizmi, known as the father of Algebra. 'Algebra' is from the Arabic word for equation (Al-Jabr).

"The Pursuit of Happiness"

Everyone pursuits his happiness through all his life. Somebody found the true love, somebody found the hate, the others work hard for the life but just be given empty and tear. Happiness is a beautiful leopard. It allures people enter a dream, and enjoys their desperation with satisfication. Dream, hope, and fantasy are three brothers, and happiness is their mother. People in the world are playing with these children, however, finally, those children will be back to their motherside, and say you good-bye.

Don't think you would catch happiness on time. Happiness is a foxy woman, smart, mean and mean. It is same with materials. All we are falling in love, with reputation, fortune, sex, and faith. You are crazy about them, and they are willing to fill in your mind. We need them, truth, but we don't need to be controlled by them. Thanks for developed technology, our desires of materials and emotion can influence another quicker than last century, faster than you and I thought.

In this era, we need to slow our feet and try to think: why we so desire to pursuit happiness of ourselves? In this warming world, ice is melting soon. I can't stop it, neither can you. Air pollution is worse and worse. Water is dirtier and dirtier. Our environment is very strict. Do you find that? Maybe not, you are handing in hand with your lover on the pleasant street, or open the air conditioner and turn the temperature to the lowest degree. People, you need to confess. If you were never feeling deep hungry and suffering in diseases or disasters, you would never understand what is real happiness.

Our happiness accompanied with us. Once it disappeared, you would know. Thus, don't be worry about your happiness, and please pursuit another's happiness, because if you do so, your mind would focus on another than yourself. Therefore, the earth will become better and better, and real happiness would come to you.

The art movements lost to history

Have you ever heard of Rayonism, Tonalism or Precisionism? Not as visible as Impressionism, they still mattered in their own unique ways, writes Kelly Grovier.

By Kelly Grovier
10 April 2017

Kelly Grovier,2017/4/10)

Impressionism changed everything. Born of defiance and a rejection of tired traditions, the collective visions of Monet and Manet, Morisot and Renoir, Pissarro and Sisley became (and remain to this day) more popular than any in the history of image-making. If that weren’t remarkable enough, the movement’s nerve and verve succeeded in opening the floodgates to a dizzying proliferation of artistic ideas, ideals and painterly techniques that altered forever the story of art.

The last 150 years have had four times as many art movements as in the previous millennium. Before Impressionism’s emergence in the 1860s, prevailing artistic tastes shifted relatively slowly. One could be forgiven for thinking, over-simplistically, that one dominant school followed another with a kind of fluid inevitability, like the passing of an aesthetic baton from one era to next: the Renaissance handing off to Mannerism, Baroque to Rococo, Romanticism to Realism. But when Impressionism entered the race, suddenly that single lane of traffic divided into many, as separate strands spidered away from the linear path into a spaghetti of creative confusion. The ensuing century and a half witnessed more than four times as many distinct and nameable movements than the entire millennium that came before.

This year alone marks the centenary of the formal establishment of at least three separate artistic schools that emerged independently in three different locations: De Stijl in the Netherlands, Productivism in Russia and Pittura Metafisica in Italy. The first of these, De Stijl, remains familiar to more than merely devoted students of art history. The geometric colour blocks of Piet Mondrian, one of De Stijl’s co-founders, continue to mesmerise. But how many of us can, without the aid of Google, picture in our mind’s eye a work by De Stijl’s Russian and Italian creative siblings – hugely significant interludes in Modern art, but hardly household terms?

"Joy of Childhood"

Sometimes I would memorize my childhood. I do not think my childhood is total happiness, but at least my parents do their best to give me what I need and what I want. My father is a serious man, and my mother is kinder than him. They are close. I have a good family, at least it looks like.

I was the first child in my family, so my parents very love me. I feel a little bit happy and a little bit upset, because they too love me to ask my behavior and homework to reward their love. I became disobedient gradually, and my disobedient brought me a lot of hit in deed. The executioner is usually my father.

I clearly remembered that my father was always working. He barely showed in front of me. As he came back home, I was often blamed by him, so I was getting scared of him like I am scared of litchi. Litchi is one kind of fruit I hate from my unclear childhood memory until now.

If you guess that I do have a miserable childhood because of it, you are wrong. The life has both sadness and happiness, the only sad thing is that you always see the bad one. No, I am not acting a tragedy of Shakespeare. On the contrary, I am grateful to my father now, because what he did and what he performanced made me become a person with good conduct. In my life, I had never saw anyone who is honest like him. Maybe because of his influence, I can not keep secrets, and therefore offend some people sometimes.

As for my mother, it's another story. She is a person who is really different from my father. She can easily considerate others' needs. I have to confess that I do not learn much wisdom from her. My younger sister is like her much more than I am.

Strange thing is that I am my mother's favorite child, and my father never hits my sister whatever how her behavior and speech offend him. This is my family.

I do have real joy in my childhood, that was when I told my family the content of a good book I read that day. My first book is a Chinese dictionary. I really like the book. Thanks for my mother, she led me into the world of books. From then on, my world became wider. My knowledge no longer only rely the live people.

Mother gave me the book world, and she gave me the other world-----the real world. She reached this through travel. I am lucky. There are seven continents on the earth, and I have been to three of them. My mother is a born adventurer and a good travelling companion. Besides travel, she likes to try new things, such as playing stocks and eating field mice, the things which my father would never do in all his life.

I like my sister, but I like to trick her more. When she was in the cradle and just a few months old, I liked to take her nipple away and made her cry. I felt that doing it is very interesting. Obviosly, my father did not think so, so I got another hit again. The events like this are many, but all the things did not influence the tight between us. We are still good firends.

At the end, I want to talk about my friends. I am a libra, who is a peace-lover of the world, and I like to make friends as well. when you meet a good friend, it is like you meet a good book. A good friend can help you understand your merits and weak points. A good friend is who can accompany you whatever you are sad and happy. A good friend can make you become another's good friend. A good friend is a power of calmness. I am lucky again, because I gain a lot of good friends when I am at different life stages. Each good friend represents different meaning to me. I am grateful, and I look forward to meeting more new friends in the future.

My family, my fantasy books' world, and my friends form my childhood. Except some unhappy, I think my childhood is satisfying. I love all things which had shown or still exist now, and I am really grateful.

Are people educated overseas entitled to the high salary?

“Overseas degree” is no longer means “high salary” in Taiwan. Because of the progress of technology, the trend of “knowledge intensive” in before has been changed to “ability-oriented”. It means that you don’t need to “know” many information, but you need to understand how to "use" these information. Even if you own just elementary school's degree, as you have one specific ability, you may gain the higher achievement than who owns college degree but doesn't have any extensive ability!!

For instance, jewelry industry is a knowledge intensive industry, but it doesn’t need any high degree or overseas degree. If you want to have higher reward in jewelry industry one day, be an apprentice and train your language ability. You can learn these not only in school but in your job, so the school qualification is not a necessary.

Apprenticeship is a very interesting system. It cultivates your real ability instead of giving you a degree. What decide your pay is your ability. I think this way suits those who don’t have any background and money.

Recently, overseas degree and high degree is no longer a necessary. They give few rate of return of investment to who wants to earn money. For example, if you are a college student in Taiwan, your beginning salary is about NT$30,000, but if you have a master degree, your boss may just want to give you NT$33,000, even if you gain an overseas master degree, your beginning salary may only NT$35,000, but your spending of studying aboard may cost you more than NT$2 million!!

Apprenticeship and vocational school become a fasion in nowadays Taiwan warns us what? Are high degree and overseas degree no longer needed? My opinion is NOPE, but your goal to study abroad is not just because of high salary, but because that you really want to  acquire something into your mind!

"Presentation Like Steve Jobs"

Host: Anyone who is watching the Steve Jobs’ keynote will tell you he is one of the most extraordinary speaker ~ America.

Jobs: “Who does the best job of that in the world?”

Host: While most of presenters simply convey information. Jobs inspires!

Gallo: I am Carmine Gallo, and today I walk you through several key techniques that Steve Jobs uses to electrify his audience. The elements you can adopt in your very next presentation.

Jobs: “Welcome to the Mac world 2008. We got some great stuff for you. There’s clear something in the air today.”

Gallo: With those words, Jobs opened Mac world 2008. Setting the theme for his presentation, and hitting at the major announcement of the day by launching an ultra-thin MacBook Air. Whether it is the new notebook or the iPhone, Jobs unveil a single headline that set the theme.

Jobs: “Today Apple is going to reinvent the phone.”

Gallo: Once you identify a theme, make your theme clear and consist in a proper presentation. Think about staff meeting as a presentation. So what say is your sales manager introducing the new software tool to help your team generate, track, and share sales leads? You might kick off the meeting this way: “Good morning! Thanks for coming! I know you’ll be really excited about this. Today we make easier for you to make your quota.” That’s the headline: “Easier to Make Quota” It’s memorable, and access the direction for the rest of your meeting. It gives your audience the reason to listen.

Bootstrapping Democracy: Transforming Local Governance and Civil Society in Brazil

Although the concept of civil society has a long and complicated history inpolitical theory, it is only in recent decades that it has become an object of sustained empirical interest. After a first revival in the late 1980s driven by the waves of democratization in Eastern Europe and Latin America (Kaldor2004), and subsequent world events like the World Social Forum, the idea of civilsociety has continued to animate a variety of scholarship on the potentials and pitfalls of associational life. Civil society has been referred to as a “millennial idea” (Comaroff and Comaroff 2001), and its rediscovery marks a turning point in political sociology. Somers has argued that for much of the twentieth century, political sociology worked with the assumption that there were “only two essential towering protagonists of social organization that forged the modern world: the modern administrative state and the market economy” (1995, 230). It has now become commonplace to theorize civil society as a necessary third leg of modernity providing a necessary complement to the market and the state. As Somers argues, “It has been called a ‘third’ space of popular social movements and collective mobilization, of informal networks and associations, and of community solidarities that sustain a participatory public life symbolized not by the sovereign individualism of the market or by the state” (1995, 230).

Certain scholarly works, such as the 1989 English translation of Habermas’s The Public Sphere and the publication of Putnam, Leonardi, and Nanetti’s Making Democracy Work, have been particularly influential in shaping the debate and most notably in reconceptualizing democracy from the vantage point of civil society. Our toolkit for understanding democratization has been expanded to include concepts such as the “public sphere” and “citizenship,” concepts that have been specifically developed to highlight how political practices areculturally specific to peoples, places, and issues (Dagnino 1998; Mahajan 1999).

One of my teacher’s husband is an African American from Los Angeles. He is a nice person with a great smile, and he likes 功夫 and cats. They feed four cats! I like cats, too, so I like my teacher’s husband as well. As for his martial arts’ dream, he told us that it is his dream from childhood, and now he made it become the real. How he realizes his dream in Taiwan? Well, he established an ally with his friends who have same hobby as him. He can use Chinese spear and other Chinese weapons. He can 蹲馬步 as well. It is incredible in our mind, right? But for him and other foreigners, the ancient “Chinese dream” is really exist. He also likes cook. When my teacher’s husband visited my family, he took a recipe to us, and it is very special. I mean, Americans like to share with their friends, and this fact would not be changed whatever he or she is a black man or not. He and she are normal people. Like us! So we really don’t need to scare of them or hate them, and have some strange stereotype of them. African Americans are also Americans. Under same education and terms, their performance would be as same as white people, even better.

For another instance, Barak Obama, the American president, is a nice example of this melting pot. His father and sisters are very smart as well, and there are some academic performances of them.

The third example of black man is not happened in US. It’s in Africa. Have you ever heard Ebola? It is a horrible virus which spread through body fluid and touching the dead body. Why is it so horrible? It is because of its contagiousness and cureless. So it’s horrible. No matter who in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea got the disease died in 21-day. So far, there are 5000 people died because of the disease. And the toll of dead still rise. From this event, we can see all countries, especially US, try to find an antidote of Ebola. This is really a global thing! But we cannot hate Africans, because they sacrificed themselves to save you!! You need to be gratitude of them.

How McDonald’s aims to tackle its image

McDonald’s has been battling a chronic image problem that they hope to erase with the continued introduction of healthier and more relevant menu options.

The fast food giant, the Associated Press writes, has been trying to change its image by adding healthier items to its meals, in addition to the option to substitute healthier alternatives into current offerings.

In the past 18 months, the chain has introduced the option to substitute egg whites in breakfast sandwiches and rolled out chicken wraps as its first menu item with cucumbers. Last fall, it announced plans to give people the choice of a salad instead of fries in combo meals. And in coming months, mandarins will be offered in Happy Meals, with other fruits being explored as well.

We’ve got to make sure that the food is relevant and that the awareness around McDonald’s as a kitchen and a restaurant that cooks and prepares fresh, high quality food is strong and pronounced,” CEO Don Thompson said in January.

During a trendy Tribeca event in October 2013, the popular fast food chain laid out the red carpet for reporters and bloggers alike to a fine dining event that only included ingredients available on their menu. Celebrity chefs took basic burger patties and fries and fashioned a cuisine of gnocchi and slow cooked beef that most McDonald’s customers would not have at their disposal. They billed the experience simply as “good food, served fast.”
